Sassafrass was founded partly as a teaching group, hoping to write songs which would help the performers learn more about singing and mature as musicians. When complete, this section of the site will contain descriptions of teaching techniques we have used and found successful, advice for would-be founders and leaders of new student singing groups, and teaching utilities. Among the first will be notes on improvisation exercises, which are fabulous ways for groups to get used to one another's style and for individuals to learn about harmonics. Advice on arrangement, drafting sheet music and lyric composition will follow. We also hope to include recordings of some of our songs with one voice part missing, so you can listen and hear how the different parts fit together, and practice singing the missing one to feel how it interacts with the others.
